About Portugal

Portugal is a beautiful country. A place full of contrasts where the visitor can find everything from sun kissed unspoilt beaches and lush green forests to arid plains and snow-capped mountains.

Whilst Portugal is no longer the undiscovered gem that it was up until around twenty years ago, it is still a country where you can easily travel to places that seem almost untouched by tourism and which instil the visitor with sense of discovery that it is hard to match in any other of the western European countries.

Flighthub offers the cheapest flights to Portugal and one of the beauties of this wonderful country is that its size means even on a short trip the visitor can experience so much of what this place has to offer. This is not to say that its geographically manageable size should make those who travel to Portugal doubt for one second the rich variety of cultural and social diversity that is on offer here.

The capital Lisbon is the gateway to cheap flights to Portugal. Here the visitor will be overwhelmed by this picturesque city that has a real old-world feel to it. Music lovers can seek out its many fado clubs in the Barrio Alto neighbourhood, history lovers can wander back in time through the secrets of its narrow streets, and culture lovers can visit the Gulbenkian Musuem, easily one of the best Europe has to offer.

For many Porto is the jewel within Portugal’s crown. Built along the hills overlooking the Douro River, Porto is a vibrant, fast-paced city that reaches out and grabs each new day with relish. It is also an ancient, historic city that still shows signs of it Roman past through the old ramparts. This heady mixture of old and new creates an easy-going, fun place for the visitor. Whether it is spending the day browsing through the Mercado do Bolhao with the locals, or watching the world go by whilst sipping on a coffee, or perhaps even a Port, in its Parisian style squares, Porto truly is a city to fall in love with.

Portugal is much more than just Lisbon and Porto. Both Braga and Coimbra are two places that should be on the itinerary for any visitor who plans to spend more than a few days.

The buzzing university town of Braga is perhaps best known and loved for its amazing old cathedral and its countless number of other, smaller but no less magnificent churches, but this is certainly not a place only for pilgrims!

Coimbra, as with Salamanca in Spain, is proudly known as Portugal’s Oxford. This is a town that once served as the nation’s capital during the late-Middle Ages and buildings from that part of its history, plus remnants of its Roman heritage, are still maintained and open to visitors today.

Another must see for those who travel to Portugal, especially those who fly into Lisbon, is the beautiful hilltop town of Sintra. This UNESCO World Heritage site surrounded by palaces and vast country estates is only a day trip away from Lisbon and was formerly a favourite haunt of the poet Lord Byron.

For those looking for a more active holiday, a visit to the Parque Nacional de Peneda Geres is a must. This large national park of pine forests and beautiful, clear-water rivers is a place that both hikers and bikers cannot afford to miss.

A snap shot of Portugal would not be complete without mention of the country’s amazing coastline and particularly that of the Algarve. This most southerly part of the country is the country’s most popular tourist destination due to its beautiful clean, natural beaches and its impeccable sea. It is the ultimate destination in which to do nothing other than relax and enjoy the beauty of the country, and it’s not such a bad place for those so inclined to take their golf clubs to either!
