About Pontinha

Pontinha is located in Odivelas municipality and is in close proximity with many big cities of the country like Lisbon and Funchal. In fact, it is just 70 metres from the Madeira Island because of which lots of people take cheap flights to Pontinha. Many of them stay in the hotels in Pontinha to visit the popular sites of the place and then move on to other cities within easy access. Besides that, there are plenty of places of interest for travellers to visit that reflect the parish’s cultural and historical heritage.

When people take cheap flights to Pontinha, they almost always visit the area’s best known building “Old Lookout” which dates back to 18th century. Its main function during its construction was to give a view; however, with time, the surrounding buildings have almost submerged it. But its historical and architectural importance remains the same. The most unusual and unique features of the building are its wrought-iron gate and trapezoidal entrance. The building, although under the ownership of 18th century nobility as a carriage house, has been transformed into a restaurant.

The Agricultural Vocational School D. Dinis da Paia is a traditional asset with a rich history which attracts many visitors to it. The school teaches courses related to environment, agro-industry and agriculture. There is also a museum attached to the building.

Another historically important place to visit is the centenary headquarters of Rules and Engineering. The long association of the place with the military protection of Pontinha has made it a site worth visiting. There are numerous stories of wars and peace treaties associated with the building.

The Church of the Holy Family is not necessarily meant for the religiously inclined only. The dozen stained glass windows done by Julio Pomar, the painter, are what make this site appealing to all. Each of the glass windows represents a member of the family and has truly become an authentic gem of Pontinha.

The capital city of Fort of Saint Jose acts as Pontinha’s headquarters. Another must-visit place is the Museum Centre of the Command Post of MFA which is MFA’s historical command post.
