The Portuguese city of Póvoa de Varzim is located in Northern Portugal, sitting halfway between Duoro and Minho rivers. According to scientists, the place has remained inhabited since lower Palaeolithic. As such, the city is old and full of history and stories. The Aqueduct, consisting of 999 arcs, is a national monument. The monument was built between 1705 and 1714, for carrying water to Santa Clara monastery from the Terroso springs.
The oldest and most significant church in the city is the Mother Church. The construction of the baroque church started in 1743 and in 1757, it was completed. The pentagonal shaped temple of Nossa Senhora das Dores Chapel has a baroque style architecture, which was not how it was originally designed; it got its current shape later on.
Tourists also visit Monte S. Felix which is Serra de Rates’ highest point. The privileged vantage point offers some excellent views. Cividade of Terroso, Town Hall and Old Town Hall and Pillory of Rates are some of the other must visit places. For the culturally inclined, a visit to the Municipal Museum of History and Ethnography and Monumental Casino da Povoa should definitely be on the agenda.
