Turda, situated on the banks of the Arie? River, is a city in the Cluj County that is a tourist hotspot for a number of reasons; with an ancient heritage, there are quite a few historically-significant buildings and monuments, a salt mine cum museum and an incredibly scenic topography featuring plunging gorges. With a conveniently situated airport, there is no dearth of cheap flights to Turda for a holiday with a difference.
The chief attraction of Turda is the Salina Turda or the Turda Salt Mine that has served as a site for salt extraction since antiquity; the mine is said to have continuously produced salt since the Middle Ages. The discovery of the fact that the climate inside the mine was extremely therapeutic, especially for respiratory ailments, gave a new boost to the tourism potential of the mine. Those interested in its history will find a lot of interesting exhibits including the excellently-preserved mining compartments and salt transport equipment. There are also quite a few entertainment options; these include a 20 meter giant wheel, a mini golf course, bowling tracks, sports facilities for handball, badminton and football and tables for billiards and table-tennis. You can host an event in the 180-seat amphitheater and or take a boat ride on the underground lake.
The other great attraction is the Turda gorge situated along the Hasdate valley. The gorge stretches to 1270 metres and the walls tower 20 meters high. The 60 caves present a wonderful opportunity for exploring the region’s topography that is marked by a wild karst landscape, steep cliffs, rocky dells and sharp crests. There are over one thousand varieties of flora and fauna, many of them rare, such as the rock eagle and the wild garlic. Over the Hasdate Water Valley, there are four suspension bridges that afford unique views of the gorge. The area is ideally suited for mountaineering and hiking; there are climbing routes in excess of 250 that are sure to keep even the greatest enthusiast occupied for quite some time; quite a few competitions are held each year. Despite its forbidding environment, there are quite a few excellent hotels in Turda which are ideal for that leisurely holiday, now made more affordable with cheap flights to Turda.
