About Giurgiu

Giurgiu, situated in Greater Wallachia, is the capital of Giurgiu County. The city lies amidst marshes and mud-flats on the Danube River’s left bank facing the city of Ruse in Bulgaria across the river. The Giurgiu remains an important commercial hub from the ancient times when the city flourished with the Danube providing connections to countries in Central and East Europe. With its innumerable historic sites and a scenic countryside, the city is a popular destination with tourists, especially with the availability of many cheap flights to Giurgiu.

Among the most interesting tourist attractions is the Clock Tower in the middle of the Unirii Square. The 22-meter high structure was built by the Ottomans as a watch tower; however, after the departure of the Turks, it was modified and a clock added; with the restoration in 2007, the clock was replaced with a new one and the original displayed in the town’s museum. The 2.8 km long Friendship Bridge is the longest over the Danube River; it is a two-level structure made of steel and has the facility of acting as a drawbridge that can be raised to allow the passage of ships. The bridge at Calugareni passing over the Neajlov River was constructed to commemorate the triumph over the Turks; the bridge features four bronze heads of Michael the Brave and the then country’s emblem as it existed then. The Comana monastery, established in 1462, is one of the most ancient in the country. Comana Natural Park lies on the way to Bucharest and is a fascinating natural reserve with its unique flora and fauna. The beautiful casa Stone palace is located in Herasti; the Druganescu Mansion dating back to 1715 now serves as the museum of ethnography and folk art. The Museum Dacia is an important repository of the region’s archaeological artifacts and is truly a history-buff’s delight. The French Monument, inaugurated in 1922, serves to commemorate the Danube French Army that liberated Giurgiu in 1918. With so much of regional heritage available for exploration and discovery for tourists arriving by cheap flights to Giurgiu, it is only natural that they choose to spend the weekend in one of the cosy hotels in Giurgiu.
