About Satu Mare

Satu Mare literally meaning “big village” is Satu Mare County’s capital; located in north-western Romania, it has a history dating back to the Middle Ages and today, it is a vibrant industrial, business, academic, and cultural centre.

A 20-minute drive away from the Hungarian border, Satu Mare is the ideal entry point to the pastoral Maramures. The town has had an eventful history that has seen it being destroyed and rebuilt many times. The old section of the town has some of the most attractive heritage buildings; around the old square, there are a number of churches. Should you decide to stay for a few days, one of the hotels in Satu Mare located here will give you the perfect ambiance for a heritage holiday. One of the landmarks is the mammoth Orthodox Church of the Archangels Gabriel & Michael with its large domes. In the middle of the small Piata Pacii square, you can find the Church with Chains, a Hungarian Reformed Church dating back to the 19th century with a wonderful collection of artifacts and a bell cast in 1633. A memorial to the 18,000 Jewish victims of the Holocaust serves as a poignant memory of the horrors of the war. The Great Synagogue, closed for many decades, now functions as a venue for cultural activities. The Saar Ha Torah Synagogue remains the only functioning Jewish place of worship. The Satu Mare County Museum has several interesting sections catering to history and art. The museum building, constructed in 1936, is built in the characteristically Romanian architectural style of the 1940's; the impressive edifice has five facades.

Thirty mile away from the city is the Land of Oas where each spring, the villagers and farmers gather together to celebrate the festival of Sambra Oilor, a traditional festival marking the departure of the shepherds to the mountains; this now has been transformed into a major folk festival. If you plan right now, you can time your arrival by one of the cheap flights to Satu Mare to coincide with this colorful event.
