Dej is a north-western Romanian city situated at the confluence of Some?ul Mic River and Some?ul Mare River in Cluj County, around 60 km north of the city of Cluj-Napoca. The city that administers four villages is easily accessible by road, rail and air; of particular interest to the visiting tourists are the cheap flights to Dej.
The 15th century Hungarian Reformed Church is the city’s landmark with a 72 meter tall tower; the building displays Gothic stone carvings that are strikingly beautiful. The church was, at one point of time, surrounded by fortifying walls constructed in the 16th century; these, however, were demolished during an 1880 renovation. Close by is the synagogue of the Franciscan Monastery in front of which there is a memorial to the countless Jews who were exterminated in the horrors of the purge during the Second World War. Among other places of interest, the one worth mentioning is the Memorial House of Prince Alexandru Vaida, the eminent politician who was the country’s prime minister in two separate stints. The ruins of the Dej Fortress, erected between 1214-35 is situated on top of the Roses’ Hill and is included in the government’s list of heritage Cluj County monuments.
The Ocan Dej Resort is perhaps the single most important reason for tourists to visit the place by one of the many cheap flights to Dej; the resort houses the largest European spa complex replete with water bodies containing chloro-sodium water and mud baths that have proved extremely beneficial in the treatment of various diseases such as rheumatism, degenerative muscular and nervous systems, gynaecological diseases, post–trauma recovery etc. Of particular interest is a lake with sodium chloride-rich water on top of a hill that once had a salt mine; the slope below there are two water bodies that contain a rich mineral mud central to the various treatments.
Stay back in one of the hospitable hotels in Dej to visit the B?i?oara Ski Resort that is just 25 km away to enjoy skiing as well as mountaineering and caving. The resort has two lovely ski slopes with some fantastic views of the surrounds. The vertical descent of nearly 250 feet is extremely thrilling even for experienced skiers. There are facilities for paragliding too.
