For some reason, a lot of people think that Marrakesh is the capital of Morocco when it really is Rabat. It may be because of the song that Crosby, Stills and Nash made in the 70s which described some intricate details of ‘taking the train from Casablanca going south’ to this city. Or maybe it’s something else. Whatever the reason is, Marrakesh is possibly one of the two most famous cities in Morocco.
You can get to this city by plane. Although it is quite expensive here, you just might get lucky and find cheap flights to Marrakesh.
There are so many things to see and even more to do in this Moroccan city. In the morning, you could go around the marketplace or the souks where you can find flowing kaftans, wonderful spices, antique rugs, handmade tapestries, shishas and even shoes. You could also visit some of the tanneries in the area where you could get a good deal on a pair of leather slippers or maybe a nice leather satchel.
You should also try and visit the Saadia Tombs, the Majorelle and Menara Gardens, the Berber Museum, the Dar Si Said Museum and the El Bahia Palace. Like other places in the country, Marrakesh also has its own Medina.
At night, trek to the Djemaa El-Fna where you will see and feel the wonderful culture of this unbelievable country. You’d hear the song ‘Marrakesh Express’ in your head while walking along the streets as you watch soothsayers, acrobats and snake charmers do their thing. You could even get a henna tattoo here. You won’t go hungry here either as there are over a hundred stalls serving local dishes.
Because it is major tourist town in the country, expect most hotels in Marrakesh to be very expensive. Believe it or not, prices can go as high as $2000 a night like in Royal Mansour Marrakech. But don’t worry, you will find accommodations which provide great service and decent facilities at $5-$10 a night.
If you landed in other parts of the country like in Casablanca or Rabat, you can easily take the bus going to the city or just drive yourself if you plan to rent your own vehicle. But then again, you can buy one of those domestic cheap flights to Marrakesh instead.
