Agadir was hit by a major earthquake in the 60s, destroying almost everything that was built there. But King Mohammed V started numerous projects and rebuilt the city to what it is today from scratch.
Most people come to this part of the country to enjoy the amazing seaside haunts. The Taghazout Beach is a favorite destination here, boasting white sand beaches and surging waves for surfing. Despite the fact that Morocco is a Moslem country, there is no strict dress code here. Women can wear shorts, sleeveless shirts and two-piece bikinis on the beach if they want. After enjoying an exciting morning of swimming and surfing on the beach, you could also try horse trekking and camel riding or walking along the Promenade in the afternoon. You could also see the old Kasbah and the new medina in town which was reconstructed by the famous Coco Polizzin, an Italian architect.
Since this is a well-known tourist spot, finding good accommodation is not a problem. You will a lot of international hotels in Agadir such as Sofitel (Royal Bay Resort) and Best Western (Odyssey Park Hotel). Unfortunately, staying in these hotels can be a bit expensive. If you are on a budget, it would be best to stay in hostels and guesthouses instead and pay only a fraction of the price that you would spend in hotels and resorts.
Although the city is quite modern, it still has an old town, community feel which invites a lot of people to go around on foot. You could, of course, take their petit taxi if you want.
