Located on Duoro River’s south bank is Vila Nova de Gaia which faces Porto from the river’s other side. The two cities are located quite closely, which often makes tourists who take cheap flights to Vila Nova de Gaia confused as to whether the little city is actually Porto’s suburb or not. But in administrative terms, both the settlements are different.
This Portuguese city is quite ancient as is Porto. But the northern neighbouring city of Porto has more tourist visibility. However, it is a good idea for tourists to take cheap flights to Vila Nova de Gaia as its attractions lie in its natural beauty. The main tourist attraction apart from the natural beauty of this quaint city is the number of wineries present here and the excellent quality of wine that is extracted from here.
Every year, hundreds of tourists book hotels in Vila Nova de Gaia to discover produces which are decades old. This discovery is no less than that of jewels by the wine connoisseurs. The oenological pride of the inhabitants of Vila Nova de Gaia, which remains unchallenged, is its port wine. The port wine made and archived may be said to be one of the finest in Europe. Many people feel that tourists visiting Porto should, in fact, be given oenological tours of these wineries, to help them feel and understand the beauty, taste and aroma of the wine first-hand. The Duoro River region is the site of two of the most reputed wine houses - Porto Calem and Taylor’s Port. There are many other equally popular wine houses as well.
Apart from the cellars and wineries, there is another tourist attraction in the Vila Nova de Gaia municipality - the beaches. There are quite a number of beaches which can provide quality sunbathing moments to tourists due to the fact that many of them have been awarded blue flags; in fact, the number is the highest in all of Portugal.
Another must visit site is the human heritage site and one of the landmarks of the city – Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar which offers an excellent view of 16th century architecture along with Oporto. El Corte Ingles at the centre of the city is the perfect destination for shopaholics.
