Setubal is situated at south of Lisbon at approx 40 km. This quintessential fishing village has an old European charm to it with its busy ports, vibrant plazas and cobblestone walks. In the 20th century, this was an extremely important centre of the fishing industry of Portugal. However, these days, the industrial life of the city is declining with majority of fishing factories being shut down. Praca do Bocage is a bustling plaza with numerous shops and cafes and can be the perfect starting point in your adventurous exploration. Close to this is Church of Saint Julian which is a structure of 16th century with gilded decorations and tile art. This area has another popular structure called Convento de Jesus which is a 15th century church showcasing the Manueline style of architecture with Arrabida marble columns and intricately decorated main doorway.
The City Museum is a site filled with treasures, displaying archaeological finds, antiques and classic religious paintings. There is a stunning collection of crystal, silver and gold ecclesiastical items.
There are plenty of natural attractions in Setubal as well. One of them is the Arrabida National Park which is situated at Setubal Peninsula’s south eastern coast. The Park has thick vegetation of various Mediterranean crops like strawberry, pistachios and olives as well as herbs like thyme, lavender and chamomile. The golden sand beaches are added attractions.
Sado estuary is another popular attraction. This nature reserve is home to more than 100 species of birds which are protected. Other places to visit are Alcacer do Sal village, City of Evora, Village of Estremoz, Vila Vicosa village and City of Beja.
