In Cascais, a part of Greater Lisbon’s sub region, is the civil parish of São Domingos de Rana with an area of 20.36 square kilometres and population of 57507. Abundance of spring waters and fertile soils has made this parish full of lush greenery that is a pleasure to the eyes. In fact, this very fertile soil resulted in human settlement since as far back in time as the Paleolithic Age. The various archaeological graves in the region are attestation of the hunting and agricultural cultures.
It is worth taking cheap flights to São Domingos de Rana and staying at any of the excellent hotels in São Domingos de Rana due to the variety of architectural wonders the parish boasts of. When tourists take cheap flights to São Domingos de Rana, the very first thing they notice is the Airport of Tires which is a good architectural sample as well. The airport was inaugurated by Americo Tomas, the then Portuguese President, in 1964 along with Count Monte Real.
Freira, the Roman village is another architectural wonder to look out for. This zone has a number of Roman remains which were first referred to by Vergilio Correia when he discovered a Roman burial mound in stone. Quite a few ceramic fragments were discovered by the archaeologist, dating back to pre-historic times. The particular location may be from that period but the village was created at about 2nd or 4th century, including the quarters and mill.
The Roman village of Miroicas is another attraction to look out for. It is the municipality’s largest Roman villa and has a huge abundance of superficial content and materials that date back to the Middle Age and Palaeolithic age, thus marking the longest period in terms of human occupation. The Roman village of Outeiro de Polima was constructed in the Roman era. In 1913, the existence was publicized by Virgilio Correia, with new excavations carried out in 1973 which exposed large amount of materials under the guidance of Guiherme Cardoso.
Other important landmarks to watch out for are Estate of Rana, Chapel of Conceicao, Church of São Domingos de Gusmao and Casal Saloio de Outeiro de Polima.
