Purwokerto is the capital city of Banyumas Regency in the Central Java region of Indonesia. The city links Jakarta with the cities of Bandung, Surabaya, Semarang, Cirebon and Yogyakarta.
This city is a good place for tourists visit. In the central public square of Alun-alun, tourists can relax and loiter in the shady square and have a taste of local foods sold by vendors. There are also restaurants and shops around and some historical buildings, the most prominent of which are the government office Pendopo Si Panjiand and the Masjid Baitus Salam Mosque.
At the center of the city is the Bank BRI Museum with its collection of coins and money.
Very popular among the tourists is Baturaden 15 kilometers north with two hot springs and camping and trekking. Hotels, budget hotels and villas are available for visitors. The Purwokerto Fly-over is a city landmark which provides an excellent background for souvenir photos. There is also the Purwokerto Railway Station, a transportation hub which is the largest and busiest in the region.
Tourists can go to the Baturraden Adventure Forest or jog at the GOR Satria, Jalan, a large sports center with fresh air and beautiful sceneries. Or they can play golf at the Wijayakusuma Golf Course. Other activities that tourists can indulge in are the Karaoke centers and Pool/Billiards, and there are some nightlife too with Indonesian singers and bands.
There are no direct cheap flights to Purwokerto. Visitors to the city can take commercial planes to the Wirasaba Purgalingga Military airport which is half hour away. If coming from Jakarta, they can take cheap flights to Purwokerto by passing through Adi Sucipto Airport in Yogyakarta, Adi Sumarmo Airport in Solo, Ahmad Yani International Airport in Semarang, or Tunggul Wulung Airstrip in Cilacap, then by road to Purwokerto.
Purwokerto is a small place and tourists can save money by going around the city by foot. Or they can have fun riding three-wheeled “becak”. The “angkot” which is a passenger van is faster but can be crowded.
