The municipality is, in fact, divided into quite a number of civil parishes, giving tourists plenty of options to go about and visit. Some of the parishes are Famoes, Canecas, Olival Basta, Odivelas, Pontinha, Ramada and Povoa de Santp Adriao.
The city of Odivelas has many monuments and popular tourist attractions, the most famous of them being the feminine Convent of Saint Denis of Odivelas. The convent was found by King Dinis I and has been here since 1295. The Lisbon earthquake of 1755 damaged the convent a lot but most of the important things have survived. At one point, famous religious women made the convent their homes. This tourist-friendly convent with its interesting pieces of architecture has become a school for girls.
Odivelas Memorial is another interesting and curious monument from the 14th century. There is a Portugal’s coat-of-arms in the style of late 15th century. This may be attributed to the restoration of the memorial at that time. Although nobody knows the exact reason for its construction, it is assumed that it may be erected to mark the corpse of King Dinis arriving at Odivelas for burial at the convent.
The construction of Aguas Livres Aqueduct was ordered by King John V during early 18th century for the transportation of water from Canecas parish to Lisbon city. Lisbon suffered chronically from lack of water and the aqueduct started its operation in 1748. The aqueduct is considered as a masterpiece and a perfect sample of ancient Portuguese engineering.
