Mbuji-Mayi is a city still with less development compared to other Congo cities like Kinshasa and Lubumbashi. It is located on the Sankuru River making it as the watering spot of the province of Luba. Its name is from Tshiluba dialect meaning Goat-Water as mbuyi refers to a large number of goats in the area while mayi refers to water. It is the third largest city in Democratic Republic of Congo and serves as the capital city of the province of Kasai-Oriental.
Diamond is the main attraction of Mbuji-Mayi as it lacks infrastructures and good roads to attract investments as well as tourism. The city is a remote area where there is little business activities except diamond mining, panning and productions. Many cheap flights to Mbuji-Mayi cater to Diamond traders and businessmen with settlements along Avenue Inga. Mbuji-Mayi Airport serves domestic and international trade flights as well as cheap flights to Mbuji-Mayi.
The city was occupied by the rebel troops and the First Congo War brought chaos to the city. Tourists are not permitted to go and set foot inside the city as Zimbabwean and Chadean Rebels manned the crossroads leading to Mbuji-Mayi. Train lines are poorly maintained and supply of electricity was initially cut off.
If there are still hotels in Mbuji-Mayi, it is probably to cater to diamond traders only. Accommodation places in the city are with poor facilities. Electricity supply is on the off and on basis, water supply is scare and food prices are high. Public transport is poor as roads remain unrepaired and in poor conditions. Crime rates and street children are regular part of everyday living in the city and any tourist will be subjected to high security risks. Mbuji-Mayi is a place in Democratic Republic Congo that is for now is not worth of a visit. Perhaps only those with humanitarian missions would dare to go and set foot in the city. The city is pitifully in bad state and needs attention not only from its government but as well as from the world. As a haven for the most precious gem in the world, Mbuji-Mayi deserves attention the way its diamond does as the city still has other good things to offer.
