The municipality of Matosinhos is situated in Portugal’s Porto District; the city of the same name is its primary city. Porto city borders the municipality in the south. Matosinhos is the death place of the famous poet Florbela Espanca and she has a local library named after her. Due to its location on the seacoast, Matosinhos has many nice beaches and the summer weather is extremely good. Many people catch cheap flights to Matosinhos to laze around in the sand of the beaches.
Matosinhos exists even before the official birth of Portugal in 12th century and was known as Vila de Matesinum. There are many local landmarks of this historically and culturally enriched place and to visit these, every year many tourists catch cheap flights to Matosinhos. On arrival, they book any of the hotels in Matosinhos and visit landmarks like Forte de Nossa Senhora Da Conceicao and Castelo Do Queijo.
Forte de Nossa Senhora Da Conceicao or Fort of Leca de Palmeira, also known as Castle of Matosinhos, is situated in Leca da Palmeira parish, in front of Port of Leixoes and was built during the 17th century. It is encircled by residences and homes and is designed in a typical star pattern having four points and protected by barbicans and angular curtain wall. There are still some cannons and battlements in the fort.
Castelo Do Queijo, also called Forte de Sao Francisco Xavier, is a fort or castle placed near the seaside. The wall of the castle which faces the sea is hit by waves quite often. Castle do Queijo means Castle of Cheese in English and the name was so given as the top of the rock on which it is built resembles a cheese piece.
Another attraction is a newer one which is a public sculpture built in 2005. Funded and commissioned by the municipality, this sculpture is called She Changes and is built in Matosinhos’ Waterfront Plaza. The sculpture has been put to life by Janet Echelman, an American artist. The sculpture reflects the industrial and seafaring heritage of the municipality and has got multiple architectural awards.
