About Belgium

There are not many countries like Belgium. It is one of Europe’s smallest countries, yet it has three official languages and a strong desire from its Flemish speaking population for it to actually be broken up into two even smaller countries! It boasts cities that are the equal of any country in the world, especially Brussels, Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp, and a cuisine that is equally exceptional, full of regional specialities, and chocolate and beer that are world renowned. Unfortunately, many of those who travel to Belgium consider it simply to be a place to spend a relaxing weekend. This view is one that Belgians are continually striving to change as this is culturally, geographically, and historically one of the most interesting and least known about parts of Europe. Located between Germany, France and the Netherlands, Belgium has historically been a place that has played a big part in Europe’s balance of power. The Romans used it as an important border with Germanic tribes, Napoleon was defeated here by the Brits in the Battle of Waterloo, and the British and Belgians went toe to toe here with the Germans during the First World War. It is perhaps because of its geographical importance that the country’s own independence didn’t come about until 1830.

Flighthub offers the cheapest flights to Belgium and these are becoming more and more readily available as the foreign visitor becomes savvy to the previously unheralded delights of this country. Cheap flights to Belgium will usually arrive in Brussels, but due to its small size, the visitor can easily experience all of this fascinating country even if a little pushed for time.

Brussels is the capital but Bruges is for many the pick of Belgium’s cities. It is a city that seems to have been somehow suspended in time and it is easy once there to understand why it is now one of Europe’s most visited cities. It is a city of canals, fairy-tale squares, and old whitewashed almshouses. It is however part of this old world mediaeval charm that some people dismiss about Bruges, as much of what you see and feel as being authentic is really all part of a well-orchestrated renovation plan to upkeep this illusion of times gone by.

Most flights to Belgium will bring you into the capital Brussels. This is a great city that is all about personality clashes: French versus Flemish, historic versus hip, boring versus bizarre. It is more orthodoxly a capital of fine cuisine, cafes, and culture. It has tremendous architecture and unexpected occurrences of the surreal. It is an easy going place where the locals value the quite slow-pace of daily life. It is a place where money can be whittled away on extravagances on Ave Louise, or where very different ways and means of life are lived out in Matonge, the capital’s African quarter. Some of the world’s most enduring images of surrealist art were created in the nondescript northern suburb of Jette, and architecture ranges from the monumental Grand Place to organic Art Nouveau façades and the EU’s real-life Gotham City.

Ghent is the Belgian city people forget. This attractive medieval city was once thought to rival Paris in terms of sheer charm but has taken on a much lower profile over the years. It is often overlooked by those who travel to Belgium, but maybe that could be half its charm!

Belgium’s second city is home to a highly charged cultural scene, a fast growing fashion industry, and a highly excitable nightlife! It may lack the natural charm of some of Belgium’s other major cities but it is a hectic and very likeable place to visit. It boats a beautiful cathedral, many other lovely churches, and a whole host of fine museums. Combine this culture and architecture with a great café and bar scene and you have a great place to pass a few fun-filled days.
