About Modica

Located in south-eastern Sicily, Modica is a pretty and large historic Italian town with several UNESCO tagged sights. It is a favorite with foodies, especially chocolate lovers. Located at the foot of picturesque Monti Iblei, the city offers breathtaking landscape views. The earthquake in 1693 damaged the town heavily but the reconstructed Baroque architecture is quite impressive. It is divided into two parts, like other mountain cities in Italy. The upper part is named Modica Alta while the lower section is called Modica Bassa. There is Modica Sorda, detached from its historic parts, a modern suburb.

While an airport is coming up at Cosmio, at present, you can access the Catania Airport. It has some cheap flights to Modica and there is a bus shuttle service connecting Modica with the airport.

You can begin exploring the city from its tourist information office located at Corso Umberto. This is where you will find the town museum as well. The street is lined with elegant 18th century mansions along with chocolate shops.

The Modica Bassa, the lower section of the city, is always bustling with activity. By tackling the steep slope, you can reach the upper part, Modica Alta. It is where the medieval ambience is still preserved, mostly. In this city, you will find a number of churches with amazing architecture. There are two elegant baroque-style cathedrals too. The Duomo di San Pietro was rebuilt in the 18th century in baroque-style after it was ravaged twice in the previous century by earthquakes.

The cathedral of Modica Alta, Duomo di San Giorgio is among the most interesting buildings of the town. Like many other edifices, it was also rebuilt after a massive quake ravaged the area in 1693. It has a bell tower and the interior has silver altarpiece, statue of St. George and pastel blue stucco. For excellent view of Modica valleys, you may explore Belvedere Pizzo. Nearby, you will find Chiesa di San Giovanni, another pretty 19th century church. The religious edifices, mesmerizing natural views and cheap flights to Modica have ensured significant tourism growth in the region.

For convenience and exploring adjacent places, choose hotels in Modica that are in its lower section. You may also opt for historic villa turned accommodation setups.
