About Metehara

Metehera is a town that was previously described as a no-man land however after a sugar processing plant was built by a Dutch corporation, the town started to attract settlers and soon became one of the most populated woreda in Misraq Shewa Zone of Oromia Region. Metehera is about 130 kilometers from Addis Ababa and can be reached from Ethiopia's capital by train on Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway.

Mount Fentale is near the town which is a famous Ethiopian attraction. The volcano’s lava flows that crossed the western side of Metehara can be seen from the town's surrounding plains and occasionally steam vents are visible at nighttime.

Metehara market offers a different kind of market experience for tourists however, this is not your typical market where you can buy food supply and goods. This special Metehara market caters for camel shepherds selling their flocks. Camel merchants coming from other part of Africa such as Sudan and Morocco sell and buy their camel flocks here. From the months of June to September, Metehara market comes alive with camel trading. Many camel traders buy from Metehara market and take them to Addis Ababa's abattoirs. Many camel and cattle's importers avail cheap flights to Metehara to buy livestock and then export them to Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Jordan and Egypt.

Travelers and traders pass Metehara on their way to Addis Ababa. For their stop over, small hotels in Metehara offer warm bed and good breakfast. Many have shared dining rooms where an open fire has injera pans to scoop up wats and meats, veggies and side dishes.

For getting around the town, it is best to take the mini bus than rent a car as the roads can be difficult during wet seasons and small vehicles easily get stuck to muddy canals.

Lake Beseka is an important lake for Metehara however, with recent development, the lake is swelling and threatens Metehara’s plains and causing floods that block railroads as well as the main roads making them impassable. Lake Beseka is on the western side of Metehara and one of the seven lakes that make up the Riff Valley Lakes.
