Ethiopia is truly a land of contrasts – high mountains, flat plateaus and low depressions; hot, desert climate and cold moorland temperatures; the old and the new… But one of the things which this country is known for is its highlands. Korem (alternative spelling Kworam) is a woreda in the northern part of Ethiopia specifically in the Debubawi Zone, region of Tigray. It is also called Quoram Vecchia. It is quite an interesting place as it is surrounded by another woreda, Ofla, on all sides. The Lalibela Airport provides cheap flights to Korem.
Located in the Ethiopian Highlands, Korem enjoys a very temperate climate. One will see grasslands and bushlands mostly, plus hillsides which are covered with thick foliage. But the diversity in the flora and fauna in this area is the real treat for eco-tourists. A lot of them do hiking and overnight camping here.
Nearby Aksum also offers tourists a lot of great sights to see. The Ruins of Aksum is often visited because of the Queen of Sheba legend attached to its name. One needs to drive up the cliff to see this which is actually the remnants of an old monastery. St. Mary of Zion is another religious site which, according to legend, holds the famous relic that is the Ark of the Covenant.
There are very few hotels in Korem and the most popular one, the Girmay Mirutse, only has 34 rooms. Again, Aksum has more in store for tourists. Sabean, Axum and Yeha are some of the best accommodations in the area. They also have amazing eateries like the Karibu Kitchen which serves pizza and other Western meals and the Atse Yohannes International Restaurant where you can order a great batch of Injera (flat bread) and wat (stew). If you are looking for cheaper fare for snack time, go to the street kiosks which sell Dabo Kolo (pretzel-like snack).
Cheap flights to Korem are available via the Lalibela Airport which is only 70 kilometers (less than two hours away) from the town center. Talca airport, a little over a hundred kilometers away, is a bit farther but may also be an option.
