Maychew is a city located at the southern zone of Tigray Region. It is about 665 kilometers north of Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa and seated along the asphalt road to Tigra's capital, Mekele. Maychew serves as a distant home to Ferah Emba or Mount Tsibet, Ethiopia's highest peak. The city's name is also spelled as Mai Chew.
Maychew is famous for being the final resistance to the Italian occupation which resulted to the defeat of Ethiopian army and the self-imposed exile of the Ethiopian emperor; Haile Selassie. Maychew then also became famous when the NGO food storage was attacked by the rebel troops during the great Ethiopian Famine in 1984.
With poor government infrastructures and a few road networks Maychew attracts few tourists. Cheap flights to Maychew are served by AXUM Airport. The airport serves airlines with cheap flights to Maychew as well as to Addis Ababa, Gondar and Lalibela.
There are some hotels in Maychew but most are mid-range hotels. If you are after low rates, you can book in hotels facing the street but don't expect to have a quiet place to sleep. With only a few competitions, services are somewhat not the usual prompt and friendly.
Maychew city is still relatively untouched by tourists. Its total land area is dedicated to farming and livestock raising. Although quite near the capital city of Addis Ababa, Maychew is not a tourists hub and only serves as a sleep over for a journey to River Nile where The Blue Nile Falls is located or for shopping and bar hopping adventures in Addis Ababa and for climbing over Mount Tsibet.
However because Maychew is a part of Ethiopia, the city is blessed with comfortable climate which is very crucial in attracting travelers. Maychew after the rain is decked with flowers and other plants indigenous to Ethiopia. Bird watching is an activity that suits the environment of the city. The city offers awe-aspiring views of Ethiopia's natural beauty and displays the colorful culture of its people.
Maychew has etched a note in Ethiopia’s history and with current development going to tap its potentials for tourism, the city is slated to become among the new additions to the long list of Ethiopia’s major tourists’ attractions.
