Jijiga is the capital city of the Somali Region (because it borders Somalia) located in the eastern part of Ethiopia. It is over 1,500 meters above sea level and according to an old historian; the city is a bit cold, barren, and surrounded by many rocky land formations around it. Only the view to the north is unobstructed – and the horizon seems to go on and on.
Historically speaking, this has been a stop of most caravan routes in the 1800's. Today, it is still a place that people go to since it is very easy to get cheap flights to Jijiga. Unfortunately, the Second World War practically ruined its very long history and everything within the city. Only a few of the palaces and churches built hundreds of years ago stand today. More than anything, it is a residential and commercial spot. But since it has its own airport, vacationers tend to spend their nights here and go around nearby towns and villages for sightseeing. Important services have been provided as early as the 1920s – telephone, telegraph and electricity. That also means that finding decent hotels in Jijiga won’t be a problem.
Hart Sheik, for instance, is only a few kilometers away from the city center. This is jam-packed with some of Ethiopia’s most amazing natural sceneries. Lake Tana is the largest in the country and is a great site for late afternoon walks, picnics and even some water sports. It features 37 small islands on its surface – churches and monasteries standing atop some of them. It is also a site of an archaeological excavation which contains historic treasures dating thousands of years ago. Very close to this is the Blue Nile, a majestic waterfall which originated from the Lake Tana. It is also called Tis Amay which means ‘smoking water’.
It is very easy to book cheap flights to Jijiga because it has its own airport servicing the town. Actually, the first runway was constructed as early as the 20s. However a new one, a little over 10 kilometers from the city center, is being used at the moment. This is used as a base by the Air Force of the country as well.
