It has operated as a federal city area. It is situated on an expansive steppe region that is semi-arid and elevated at 347 meters above sea level.

Astana was famous for its trade fairs that were participated in and attended by merchants and traders from all over Central Asia and Russia. Today, the city is known for its many international festivals and celebrations of dance, music, and the arts. The city’s most famous landmark is the Bayterek that offers a panoramic view of Astana from its tower observation deck. The city’s Green Water Boulevard is also called “The Shining Path” and is proudly hailed as Kazakhstan’s massive national boulevard. Other city landmarks include the Pyramid of Peace, a glass structure bearing the four colors of the country’s flag as it is lit at night, and the Ak Orda Presidential Palace.

Hotels in Astana are spread across its three main districts. The Almaty District consists of five villages. The Yesil District measures an approximate area of less than thirty-two thousand hectares. The Saryarka District is comparatively smaller at nineteen thousand hectares of area spread. Astana is the world’s second coldest capital city, next only to Mongolia’s Ulaanbaatar capital. The city experiences climate extremes of dry and extremely cold winters and warm summers. There are but brief rain periods during the summer months.
