A woreda in the in the western part of the country specifically in the region of Benishangul-Gumuz is the embodiment of Ethiopia’s real culture – Asosa. Despite having its own airport, which means cheap flights to Asosa can be booked very easily, this area is relatively untouched and unvisited. This can be observed in the numerous tribes which live today like they did thousands of years ago despite the entry of the modern world.
The towns are far from each other so there is that sense of isolation and remoteness when one travels from one woreda to another. But then again, that is the appeal of Asosa and the whole western part of the country.
People who come here do not take a vacation, relax or do recreational activities. People who come here explore and experience the everyday lives of the Ethiopians. One can choose to hike around town, into the thick forests and maybe visit some tribes. If you think that this would be tiring, then you can rent a horse in one of the stables in town. Asosa is famous for their coffee bean, possibly the first which was ever cultivated in the whole world. A lot of tourists join in Ethiopian coffee ceremonies done by local villagers.
There are only over half a dozen really good hotels in Asosa such as the Agew, Equatorial and Kelem. Most of these only have an average of 20 rooms. The service is simple, their facilities decent enough. But the best thing about these places is the sheer hospitality of the staff and the locals. Eating out is no problem. Hotels have in-house restaurants serving good local cuisine Injera and wat.
The best way to get to this town is to book cheap flights to Asosa which is the most convenient and comfortable way to travel here or elsewhere. Besides, you will surely need the energy for the real adventure that this place and the rest of Western Ethiopia have to offer. Planning to move from one woreda to another? Rent a vehicle – preferably a 4x4 or a large pick-up truck which can go on a dirt road.
