Agaro is a town in the southwestern portion of Ethiopia and functions as a separate wereda or district and being managed by a local government. The town also served as the capital of the former Kingdom of Gomma and became one of the first class towns in the Jimma Zone belonging to the Oromia Region.
Unlike other Ethiopian towns, Agaro is one of most westernized town in Jimma Zone ,Ethiopia. The town is noted for its Coffee, producing one of the best varieties of Coffee Arabica. Roads connect to Agora as the town serves as the transient road to Ilubar, Gambela and Wollega districts. The Makele airport serves cheap flights to Agaro and to reach the airport you have to drive for at least an hour and 50 minutes. You can get cheap car rental from the airport for getting around the town to save from taxi fares or take the normal bus with cheap tickets.
Although a modern city, Agaro still receives little tourists and most cheap flights to Agaro consist of coffee enthusiasts traveling the world in search for a different taste of coffee experience which Agaro offers. The town has one of the biggest coffee plantations originally owned by Fitawrari Gebre Kristos. Agaro being a center for commerce has a large market where Ethiopian goods can be bough such as the famous Jimma Zone's three leg stools, hand-woven baskets and plantation and wild grown coffee. There is also a small town park which provides comfortable seats while drinking Ethiopian drink called “besso” made of ground barley mixed with water. There is the town City Hall which houses a small museum with collections of some of the treasures of the past rulers of Gomma Kingdom.
Agaro’s asphalt roads run through the highland’s beautiful landscape and pass through large herds of cattle grazing on the green ground. Driving to the north offers dramatic views of the countryside and the colorful people tending their farms.
Agora has some good hotels especially for travelers from the western and northern portions of Jimma Zones. Most of hotels in Agaro are classified as mid-range hotels offering clean bed with bathroom. Some offer the typical Ethiopian breakfast consisting of Fatira, a large pancake with layers of eggs, Genfo, a kind of porridge with spicy wats, and of course the pride of Agaro, the aromatic locally brewed Ethiopian Arabica coffee.
