Somalia is a broken city that was once beautiful and now working towards restructuring through various help channels. One might think there is nothing left in the rubble, yet the architecture is amazing. Mostly, the architecture has a Middle East feel and the buildings are sometimes painted white giving it a castle like look. The Turkish Empire is working hard at revitalizing this area.
The city mainly being Mogadishu is one of the safest places to tour as other parts of Somalia are very risky. One can use the local authorities or militia men for security and accessibility and hence, one should not wander off the streets alone. One can get in the city through the Aden Adde International airport, located 5 kilometers away from the city center or by road from nearby countries which is cheap and risky. At the port, boats are cheaper means of travel at negotiable fares but the trip is usually long taking almost a whole week. In addition, cheap flights to Somalia are available at very reasonable rates.
Somalia plays host to the largest market known as the Bakaara market which is open. The market was opened with the intention of facilitating trading activities. Currently it sells everything, from the innocent goods to fire arms and corrupt documents and one is cautioned of being “showy” on valuables and money.
Accommodation is available and relatively cheap at about 100 dollars and that caters for safety. Some of the hotels in Somalia include Nasa Hablod, Saafi, Shamo and the Safari hotel. The accommodations have restaurants and one will find at least one bar that offers a drinking experience, while the international cuisines are served at the Hablod and Saafi. Anyone who is thrilled by danger, a story and looking for the unexpected, will find Somalia to be the best vacation spot.
