There are direct cheap flights to Sao Tome from Angola, Portugal and Gabon. Tourists are advised to book flights that would arrive in the morning. The Sao Tome Airport is crowded during the afternoons as most flights depart and arrive at this time of the day. You can also get to the city via boat from Doulala. Travelling by car is an option as there are roads coming from the South of the island. It is not advisable to take the train as railways aren’t really very modern. First-timers are instead advised to get cheap flights to Sao Tome.
For getting around the city, you can hire a scooter for around $20. Scooter rentals are very popular in Sao Tome that even hotels and locals offer such a service. Sao Tome is a peaceful city so you wouldn’t have to worry about going around alone. Note though, that it’s best to have Malaria vaccination before visiting the city. Mosquitoes are very common.
