The Japanese have a particular affinity to protect their culture, which explains the number of old Buddhist temples around their city, like the Sasamuta Shrine and the Oita mo Motomachi Stone Buddha. Another culturally important landmark in Oita-shi is the Kamezuka Mound, an excavated tomb site of an old, native kingdom controlling the area around Oita Prefecture. Today, it is a park with Haniwa burial figurines that reminisce the hidden past of the Kamezuka Mound.
Arata Izosaki is a famous architect in Japan, and a native of Oita. His works are of the Metabolist architecture movement. His enduring work includes the Oita Medical Center, converted into the Oita Prefectural Library, until it was renovated yet again to establish the Oita Art Plaza. Many art students interested in Izosaki’s art can view the scale models of his works inside the Art Plaza.
For a more dynamic tour of Oita-shi, tourists can either come to the Sekizaki Ocean and Astronomical Observatory Hall or the Oita Marine Palace Aquarium Umitamago. They host dolphin shows, besides the brilliant aquarium display of different fish species. The Astronomical Observatory is not a very common view in any city, so it is a must try in Oita-shi.
