We all know that the highest mountain ranges in the world are located in the Central Asia (majority of it) and one of them is the Pamirs Mountain, which is also called the Roof of the World. You can come near to these mountain ranges through the city of Khorugh. The city is part of the Gorno – Badakhshan Autonomous Province of Tajikistan. Khorugh is an elevated city with 2,200 meters above sea level and is being bordered by the confluence of Panj and Ghund rivers. This city was once a disputed area in which Russia, Bukhara, Afghanistan and even Britain were claiming it in which the Russian won the claim, but the GBAO of Tajikistan is the current ‘owner’ of this city.
As a foreign tourist, your main point of entry to this country is the international airport in Dushanbe. There is one flight per day from Dushanbe to Khorugh and hence, make sure that you will get the cheap flights to Khorugh with the right schedule or you may have to spend some time in Dushanbe, which is not bad at all. If you do not want to take the plane, there are vehicles going to Khorugh and the travel time is about 15 hours and you can find them in any parking lots. Air travel time is just one hour, so it is up to you what will you choose. Land travel can cost $60 while air travel can cost $85. If you are in the town, you can get around by using marshrutkas or shared taxis. Walking is possible.
For backpacking tourists, there are several hotels in Khorugh such as lodges and inns. You can get one for about $10 per night. Use online booking sites in order to get great deals such as cheap flights to Khorugh as well as hotel accommodations and vacations. In 2012, there was violence that occurred between the government and the guerrilla forces wherein hundreds are said to have died (unofficial count).
