Zimbabwe is a landlocked country near South Africa. It was once the richest country in Africa but now is a dwindling economy under President Mugabe. Moreover, it has a population of more than 12 million. The standard currency vary, it has always been the dollar but also accepts others like the Euro. Cheap flights to Zimbabwe are nowadays available at great rates.
A tourist planning to travel to this country will first need a visa, depending on nationality. The visa receivership is categorized into three: those that can travel without, those that can get it on arrival and those that requires one to obtain prior travelling. It is important to cross-check such details before travel begins.
Transport is readily available and ranges from cheap to expensive. For instance, flying within the country can be quite expensive and the airport is at Harare. On the other hand using the road is cheap especially when travelling to Johannesburg. However, travelling by train is the cheapest and is more adventurous to tourists with flexible schedules. Hitch hiking is also acceptable but one should be wary of crimes such as hijacking or kidnapping. Visitors can enjoy cheap flights to Zimbabwe by travelling during the day.
Some of the places to visit should be the national parks such as Hwange, Matobo, Mana pools and the Great Zimbabwe ruins. In addition, one will enjoy walking with the lions or enjoy musicals at the Harare International Festivals of arts.
When going out, a tourist should ask for Sadza and stew when hungry. If treated kindly, clapping twice gently would be a polite sign that means “thank you.” One will find local drinks such as Chibuku or the normal imported drinks. For the non alcoholics there is a variety of fruity juices to choose from such as mazoe an orange squash.
Accommodation is also cheap for tourists with a low budget and even those with a high one are well catered for. If finding a hotel proves difficult or one is looking for a different experiencing, camping would be exciting especially for groups and is definitely cheaper.
Most importantly, a tourist should steer away from political debates and being opinionated about the country. The locals are very sensitive about such issues and easily take offense. Most hotels in Zimbabwe are comfortable and very accessible. On the other hand personal safety is important, there is enough security but that does not guarantee total protection, you are your own guard first.
