About Uzgen

Found between Osh and Jalal-abad in the country of Kyrgzstan, Uzgen town is the capital of the district of Uzgen that is located in the province of Osh. It is geographically situated on the eastern edge of the Ferghana Valley and on the shores of the Kara-Darya. Uzgen is an ancient town, finding itself in the annals of China that date back to the 2nd century BC. Having existed for more than two millennia, Uzgen is one of the earliest settlements in Kyrgyzstan. The town teems with cultural and historical significance, drawing tourists and observers that are regularly flown in through cheap flights to Uzgen.

Uzgen offers several places of interest and tourist attractions. The town boasts of ruins of ancient burial grounds for saints and famous personalities, as well as shrines and fortresses. An 11th century mosque is amazingly well-preserved. Just outside town are the two tourist areas of Salam-Alik and Kara-Shoro. These resorts are favorite summer vacation getaways of travelers from the region. The mountain slopes of Kara-Shoro are said to have healing waters from its many natural springs. Rich in cultural heritage, Uzgen lies on the ancient Silk Road in Central Asia, a huge and renowned trading pass of regional merchants. Today, Uzgen has remained to be a commercial hub. Visitors come for the rich trade, as well. Hotels in Uzgen are filled especially during the peak seasons for commerce. The town has a very busy and extensive regional bazaar where the best regional wares, produce, arts and craft, and houseware are sold by merchants from the outlying areas, although the primary merchants and traders are still the Uzbeks.

Uzgen is full of monuments, most of them massive landmarks in town. There is a colossal 12th century minaret that rises 44 meters high. Beneath the town grounds are buried the important personalities of the Karakhanid dynasty when Uzgen was made their administrative capital.
