Located at the southern end of the island of Taiwan, Kaohsiung is an industrial city and port, and also the second most populated city in the country. It is the island nation's largest port and the sixth largest in the world. Most of Taiwan's exports leave through Kaohsiung. It is called “Harbor City” because of the busy port.
The Kaohsiung International Airport services the city with international flights. It is located south of the city proper and also serves as a transfer point for the larger Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport in Taipei.
Another way of getting to Kaohsiung is via the Taiwan High Speed Rail (HSR) line. Whereas normal trains take from 4 to 5 hours to get to Taipei, the HSR travels the distance in 90 minutes. From Taipei, you would need to transfer to the MRT from the HSR terminal, in order to get to Kaohsiung city proper.
As a planned city, Kaohsiung has amenities for traveling around on foot, by light rail mass transit, and bicycles. There is bicycle rental service points located at the MRT stations. Because Kaohsiung is largely a flat area, even those who are not athletic can enjoy riding around the city in a bike. Another popular mode of transport is the scooter. It is easy to buy a scooter, but there are ordinances which the buyer needs to understand before he can drive around using a scooter.
Besides the attractions of the city, the biggest tourist attraction for Kaohsiung is Cijin District. This is an island on the mouth of the harbor which is a popular tourist attraction for foreign and local tourists. Visitors can rent a bike on the island to traverse the bicycle path winding its way around Cijin.
In the city proper, there are Night Markets which are great occasions for shopping. The night markets are also great places to taste the local cuisine. There are food stalls all around the markets and the adventurous traveler should take the occasion and try the food. There are also night clubs, bars and lounges for those who want to relax and enjoy some entertainment while drinking with friends.
As a busy city, there are a lot of possible places to stay, depending on the budget and the purpose of the visit. There are budget hotels located all around the city, with access to the internet and other amenities.
