Bathinda is one of the oldest cities in Punjab India and was once known as Bhatinda. The city is located in the northwestern region of India and currently serves as the administrative headquarters of Bhatinda District. The city is also called the "Gateway to India".
Bathinda is the seat of education in Punjab with two government universities located in the city. Central University of Punjab, the Government Rajindra College and a government Engineering College called Giani Zail Singh Punjab Technical University attract students from different parts of India. Most of these students live in dormitories and small apartments near the heart of the city. Small hotels in Bathinda also provide good accommodation for transient tourists and students.
Within the city, there are several monuments that stands as memorial to Ancient Indian civilization. Qila Mubarak is a small brick monument that was believed to have been visited by Sikh guru Gobind Singh and contains two gurudwaras. Qila Mubarak Fort served as a prison to India's first Empress, Razia Sultan.
During dry season, it is not recommended to roam the city as dust-laden winds are prevalent causing interruptions to regular activities. The road is dusty and the evenings are usually hot and humid. During the wet season that is from July to mid-September, flash flooding are normal and the roads are muddy and traveling is difficult. Cheap flights to Bathinda are most available during this period of time.
The city has six major railway junctions to serve students and workers coming from nearby cities. Travel hour is from one hour to two hours which is faster than taking the bus as heavy traffic is a normal road occurrence and usually extends up to the evenings.
Despite heavy traffic and the not so good road conditions, the city is still worth visiting for its many places of interest such as: The Rose Garden with many varieties of rose flowers and a good picnic spot, the Mitta Mall and the City Walk Mall, two good shopping malls in the city, the Thermal Lake, which offers boating experience and the Lakhi Jungle and its temple.
Bathinda is a city besieged with problems of urban mis-planned pollutions and traffic congestion however the city’s charm seems to be the undying factor why the city is despites of its environment concerns is still worth of cheap flights to Bathinda being one of India’s tourism gems
