Some people think that Ethiopia is a boring country, dry and filled with hot deserts. But Ziway, a woreda in the Misraq Shewa Zone, will change your mind. This district is found in the Oromia Region of Central Ethiopia. A lot of people pass through here because it is in the middle of the highway connecting the capital of Ethiopia Addis Ababa and the Nairobi in Kenya. Although pretty close, cheap flights to Ziway are preferred by most via Bole International Airport.
This is a famous eco-tourism location because of the utterly peaceful and gorgeous Lake Ziway or, in the local dialect, Hara Dembel. It features several volcanic islands filled with lush greens while the wide expanse of the lake is home to hippopotamus, migrating birds and the succulent Tilapia.
This area will also be adored by history buffs and culture lovers. Tulu Gudo is an island in the lake where the mysterious Ark of the Covenant is said to have been hidden a long, long time ago by no other than the son of King Solomon and Queen Sheba. The Long Tulu Gudo Island Adventure is a tour which lets you learn the romantic history of the famous relic and find more interesting stuff in the monastery of Maryam Tsion.
You can do overnight camping in the area if you want to but if you aren’t that adventurous, there are several hotels in Ziway where you can check in to. Perhaps the best part of the vacation in Ziway is the fact that you can give back to nature. Joining tree planting activities is a must for everyone who visits. Woven blankets and shawls in the Oromo and Tigraian style are for sale here. You can also get wooden home décor and wicker-like baskets made from local grasses which are dried under the sun and then woven.
There are numerous cheap flights to Ziway which lands in the Bole International Airport. Located in Addis Ababa about 160 kilometers away, this airport is only 4 to 5 hours’ drive from the city center. From a very long history, beautiful architecture, interesting culture and wonderful natural scenery, Ethiopia – especially the small town of Ziway – really has it all.
