Located in on the southern bank of the Yellow River in Central China, Zhengzhou is a major transportation hub as well as a regional center for politics, economics, technology and education. The city is home to 8.6 million inhabitants and is the most populated city in Henan Province.
Travelling through China by train, it is almost impossible to miss out Zhengzhou. As the country's biggest train hub, it is possible to take a ride from the city to almost anywhere else in China. Buses also service Zhengzhou and are cheaper than train rides. However, bus rides usually also take much longer than trains.
For a travel to Zhengzhou, the one place that one should not forget to visit is Erqi Square. By day, the Erqi Memorial Tower is a tourist attraction and worth the visit. After sundown, the place becomes a night market which extends to the immediate streets around Erqi Square.
A very noteworthy place to visit is the Shaolin Temple. Located in the Song Mountains and it is about two hours ride from Zhengzhou. The visitor can ride a train, a bus or hire a van to get to the Temple. Guided tours are also available. These tours not only visit the Temple but also allow for sightseeing along the way, with plenty of time to enjoy lunch.
Being in Central China, there is a wide range of cuisine which can be found in Zhengzhou. For the frugal traveler, the street food is very representative of the country's culinary delights. Special to the area is hulatang for breakfast. This is a spicy soup for which Zhengzhou is famous for.
In China, there is no such thing as Chinese noodles, as there is lot of types of noodles. While in Zhengzhou, try the mutton noodles and the beef noodles. There are several good restaurants which specialize in these dishes and a taxi driver would be able to drop you off at the nearest one upon request.
As an urban and industrial area, it is expected that there are good places for a drink or a night out. If you just want some scenery there are open air street food stalls which also serve beer. Otherwise, there are western style bars and night spots in most areas of the city.
It may not have cheap pension houses or hostels, but there are still some cheap lodgings in the city. There is also a wide range of quality to the lodgings. The visitor is advised to shop around before deciding on a place to stay.
