Located in central Netherlands on the eastern side of Utrecht, Zeist has a rich heritage of unique historical buildings, grand country estates, imposing manors and matchless scenic beauty. Modern attractions include a contemporary shopping centre, a large entertainment complex and Het Slot Zeist, a 17th century-inspired hotel that is extremely popular with tourists visiting via cheap flights to Zeist; the town is served by the airport in Amsterdam that is barely 58km away.
The Castle Groeneveld is one of the best examples of 17th century Dutch architecture with its narrow garden, a maze of pathways and verdant greenery. It is now a thriving centre with numerous art exhibitions, lecture sessions and many activities that keep both adults and children entertained. TheWeistaar Cheese Museum and Partyboerderij draws in a lot of visitors for its unique cheese museum and the opportunity to purchase a great variety of famous Dutch cheeses. The Soestdijk Palace, a grand country manor, offers a great deal of Dutch heritage for appreciation and is an excellent venue for high-profile events. The Pyramid of Austerlitz, built in just a month in 1804 by French and Batavian soldiers during the French period, is an excellent starting point for hiking and cycling trip through the woods and over the moor. Many tourists find it worthwhile to come to Zeist by one of the cheap flights to Zeist only to experience its heritage.
The shopping centre of Zeist is formed by the Slotlaan, First Hill, 1st and 2nd Hogeweg, Steynlaan and Belcour. In the centre are several small and large stores, chain and department stores and specialty stores. In Zeist, there are two markets held on Thursdays and Saturdays; items on sale include fresh food, flowers, household items, fabrics and other textiles.
The surrounding countryside of Zeist are perfect for undertaking long walks or cycling trips; a number of planned routes have been laid out by the tourism department that take you through the various points of interest in the region. While there are plenty of hotels on Zeist, tourists may like to enjoy the camping facilities in the woods close to the Zeist Utrecht Ridge.
