At the beginning of the 20th century here was shot the second Dutch fictional film. Until the World War II the resort becomes more and more popular and many beach restaurants and hotels were built. Because of the German invasion of the Nederland’s and the occupation, in 1942 the resort was severed damaged by the Nazi plans to protect the beaches from potential invaders. The beach access was no longer permitted and the Atlantic Wall was built, almost all the avenues were destroyed to make way for the fortifications. After the Netherlands becomes free again, the tourism becomes more and more important in the area and resorts were rebuilt and many new ones can be found on the shores of the North Sea.
