Situated in the north of Amsterdam, Zaandam is a constituent of the Zaanstad municipality that comprises 7 towns in the Zaan region. The area is a big tourist draw due to its characteristically Dutch flat green landscapes and ancient windmills. Tourists also find it easy to come here as there are plenty of cheap flights to Zaandam via Amsterdam that is just 10 miles away.
A brief 10-minute walk from the station will take you to the main recreational area that is dotted with pubs, cafés and restaurants where you can sit at leisure, enjoy a meal or a drink and admire the Zaan River waterfront. Visitors will be amazed to learn that the Zaan region is probably the world’s most ancient industrial area as it had the advantage of wind power long before steam energy came into vogue.
A short walk away from the railway station is the famous Tsar Peter House, a small building that achieved legendary status as it was once resided by Tsar Peter when he was learning the art of ship carpentry. Built from old timber in 1632, it is one of the oldest wooden buildings in the country. The Zaan Museum now owns the property. In the proximity of the Tsar Peter House is another famous building that was immortalized by Claude Monet in his painting, the Blue House. Strangely, the structure is not blue presently but the administration intends to change that.
If you have already booked cheap flights to Zaandam for a small vacation, you will not be disappointed at all since shopping opportunities are available aplenty; you will enjoy browsing the countless stores along the picturesque canal adjoining the main road; there’s huge variety available that include clothes, shoes, novelty items and, even, pets.
