Located in the Debub Gondar Zone of Amhara Region, Werota also spell as Wereta is a hilly town in the northern part of Ethiopia. Woreta also serves as the administrative capital of Fogera district.
The town is near Lake Tana which is one of major attractions in Ethiopia. The famous lake has 37 islands scattered on the surface of the lake where structures such as churches and monasteries stand. There is a church which is a century old built on top of a cliff and can only be reached by a very steep winding path where a Madonna portrait painted during the 15th century lies.
Many cheap flights to Werota are directed to Bole International Airport which is some 216 miles from the town's center. However other cheap flights to Werota including domestic and cargo flights are served in Debra Tabor Airport which is 20.6 miles from the town center and from Mekane and Gondar Airports which is 34 miles and 45.6 miles respectively away from the airport.
If you are planning to visit Werota by the mini bus or the Cobra car it will take you around 1 hour and 30 minutes if you take the route from Bahir Dar. Don't take the route from Gayant as it would take you around two hours to reach Werota. For those with limited budget, taking the bus is the best way to stretch travel budget. However to escape those unnecessary stopping (waiting for passengers, gas filled-up, etc) you can take the classy buses or the Selam Bus or Skybus. You can buy your ticket in advance and definitely they're faster than the normal bus. Although they’re more expensive they're still cheaper compared to plane tickets.
Woreta being a capital city this small town has good transport, electricity and telephone lines. Travelers would find good accommodation in hotels in Werota especially those located in the town's center. Most hotels have stable supply of electricity, phone lines and with amazing views of the distant mountains and lakes.
The Werota-Weldiya Road built across the Riff Valley is a fast route to reach the famous Riff Valley. The Riff Valley offers the gateway to great excursions to African Wildlife, lakes and hot springs.
Lacks of infrastructure is the main reason why Werota attracts few tourists. However with government backing its international potential for tourism, it won't be long when Werota will be an ideal tourist destination.
