Located in Lazio region of Italy, Viterbo is a hill town with a medieval past and capital of the province of the same name. The wonderful papal center and magnificent edifices are admired by tourists. The scenery of Mounts Cimini descending towards the sea makes it a visual teat for nature lovers as well. The city’s elevated position across mountain slopes offers viewers grand panoramic view of the sea coast and adjacent areas. The region around the city is replete with traces of Etruscan and Roman architectural remains like ancient thermal spas and bridges.
To reach the city, you can access the Rome Ciampino G.B. Pastine International Airport or Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport. In near future, you may be able to get cheap flights to Viterbo at the proposed Aeroporto di Roma-Viterbo which will be turned into a civil aviation base from a military airport soon.
The medieval architecture of the town keeps viewers enthralled, the natural beauty being the icing on the cake! The cathedral called San Lorenzo with a 12th century origin is a major tourist draw. The Palazzo dei Papi served as the Papal seat for the last part of the 13th century. The Church of San Francesco with its Romanesque-Gothic architecture also gets lots of footfalls. It was renovated after being damaged by rampant bombings in World War II. Another important religious edifice in the city is Palazzo dei Priori made in the 13th century. It has some amazing frescoes inside and a Baroque fountain outside.
Another ancient church of Viterbo, Church of S. Maria Nuova is worth exploring as well. It has some 15th century paintings and frescoes. The national archeological museum is housed inside the castle Piazza della Rocca. You should not miss exploring Villa Lante as it is among the finest gardens in the country. The Museo del Colle del Duomo is also worth a trip. The natural hot springs outside the city, medieval ruins and cheap flights to Viterbo make it one of the most sought after cities in Lazio.
While Viberto is not exactly replete with accommodation options, you can find some decent hotels. You can also choose from hotels in Viterbo near the spas.
