Veenendaal is situated in central Netherlands on the site of a 16th century peat colony village; with “veen” and ‘daal’ in Dutch standing for peat and valley, literally, the name translates to "peat valley". Till the commencement of World War II, the small settlement’s main occupation was in the wool and tobacco industries but after the War, the town expanded rapidly and is today an important tourist destination for its award-winning green and scenic hotspots, amenities for city cycling, excellent shopping and a vibrant cultural life. Served by Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport that is just 79 km away, there are plenty of cheap flights to Veenendaal for tourists.
Veenendaal, in the heartland of the Netherlands, is a rapidly-expanding and happening town that is all the more attractive to tourists because of its woods, hills and a lush national park just outside the town boundaries. The thriving textile industry inspired the development of local shopping; the city centre is home to over 300 shops ranging from massive departmental stores to cosy designer boutiques. Apart from modern shopping, the bee market that has been organised annually on July’s third Tuesday for more than one hundred years is a huge tourist draw. Tourists in summer will find a number of special markets as well as fairs that are organized. Tourists coming in on the plentiful cheap flights to Veenendaal will rejoice in the shopping opportunities available here. There are a number of hotels in Veenendaal to cater to the ever-increasing tourist traffic more than adequately.
While in the city centre, tourists can also visit the beautiful library at the Culture Centre, the newly-constructed Town Hall and the Main Street. Sport is high on the town’s priority list; there are over 50 sporting clubs that have facilities ranging from gymnasiums to bowling alleys and fields. The Dutch Food Valley Classic, earlier known as Veenendaal-Veenendaal cycle race, is among the top two cycle racing events in the country.
