Valkenswaard, located in the North Brabant province of southern Netherlands, gets its name from the falconers who used to catch wild falcons; “valk” is the Dutch word for “falcon”. The town today is popular for its scenic vistas, heritage, art and culture besides some wonderful dining and shopping opportunities. With Eindhoven barely 32 km away, there is no dearth of cheap flights to Valkenswaard.
Valkenswaard sits in the lap of nature; you can follow the course of the beautiful stream, the Drommel as it flows through the gorgeous Dutch countryside that is an astonishing mix of hedgerows, lush pastures, dense woods, heather fields, undulating meadows and plentiful pools and ponds that support a diverse bird and aquatic wildlife. The Three Bridges serves as the start of an engrossing walk to the Marine Mountain or the Leenderbos forests. The Leenderbos and Groote Heide form a very extensive nature park on a continuous sand ridge between Eindhoven and Belgian Achel. It consists of coniferous forests and moors, intersected by some stream valleys that are home to many different birds. Furthermore, the forest is inhabited by deer, foxes, hares and rabbits. The entire area is ideal for hiking, cycling and horse-riding. The scenic beauty of the surrounds is good enough reason for booking cheap flights to Valkenswaard.
Valkenswaard is full of interesting monuments; Dommelse Watermill, dating back to the 13th century was a unique double mill capable of milling corn as well as oilseeds. Venbergse Watermill, erected in 1227, is now a beautifully-restored restaurant. Birkenhof is a former wartime bunker which is a good and rare example of camouflage architecture and a reminder of the Second World War. Huize Agnetendal, formerly a rectory from 1815, is located on the grounds of the former convent St. Agnetendal. Also on site are the restored remains of a late medieval wall with ramparts. There are a number of attractions for children too in the form of zoos and recreational areas. Dining out can be immensely enjoyable; the town has a number of cafés and restaurants serving delicious regional cuisine besides international favourites. There are plenty of hotels in Valkenswaard that can make your stay truly memorable.
