Utsunomiya-shi is best known for the Oya Temple. Set apart from most Buddhist temples in Japan, this temple has a stone entrance and manages an underground cavern museum. The temple management does not let cameras in the temple though. You can easily identify the Oya Temple by the statue of Kannon outside facing the street. Inside is a rock carving of Senju Kannon, which is said to be the oldest rock carving of that sort. After the temple, you can proceed with the Stone Museum where they feature local rock types and even old rocks. On your way out, do not miss the statue of Heiwa Kannon, a statue built to commemorate the fallen soldiers during World War 2.
There are other attractions in Utsunomiya-shi, like the Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts, a destination for the culturally inclined, and the Waku Waku Grandy Science Land, a child-oriented science attraction where they can also bike around. You can also drop by the Utsunomiya Futaarayama Jinja Shrine, a historical Buddhist temple in the area. If you are tired of seeing Japanese temples, try the Matsugamine Catholic Church, a very fresh sight from Japanese Buddhist temples.
