About Ulaanbaatar

If you’ve never been to Ulaanbaatar before, then this is the best time to visit Mongolia’s largest city. This place is a favorite destination of foreign and local tourists with its rich culture, wonderful traditions and inviting atmosphere.

Where to go and what to see

With its cool and pleasing temperature, this capital city is perfect for outdoor adventure. You can hike and camp at the mountain of Kharkhiraa or explore the canyons at the Gobi desert during the summertime without worrying of too much heat.

The Gorkhi-Terelj National Park is also one of the best places to camp with your family with the Khagiin Khar Lake as the focal point. The park has its line of restaurants and place to stay overnight. If you want to explore on your own, you need to take extra precaution as this place has no signs and most of the roads are undeveloped.

Ulaanbaatar has two of the best monasteries in the city, the Gandan Monastery and the Choijin Lama Monastery, Gandan is the central monastery in Ulaanbaatar that’s boasting of a huge 15-year old statue of Buddha. The Choijin Lama on the other hand, showcases Mongolia’s rich history with its thousands of relics and other ancient pieces. The statues in this temple are made of wood and bronze and tourists will have a chance to see some of the mummified monks.

If you happen to reach Mongolia on the month of July, then stay for a while for a chance to see the Naadam festival. This exciting festival is famous for several competitions like horse racing, archery, and wrestling.

Where to Stay

Budget travelers can opt to stay in dorm-style inns and enjoy their holiday without breaking the bank for expensive hotels. Mid-range apartments, guest house and affordable rooms with privacy are also available in the city.
