About Torquay

By normal standards, there is not much to see in Torquay, one of five beach suburbs of Harvey Bay, Queensland, Australia. In Harvey Bay however, there are five camping and caravan grounds, and lots of youth and sports facilities.

Harvey Bay is a holiday destination for humpback whale watchers. From there, it is a short hop to the Lister Fraser Island and Lady Elliot Island, both World Heritage sites. The former is the largest sand island in the world while the latter is a coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef. The sheltered water is an aquatic paradise with diving, swimming, sailing, fishing and water sports all throughout the year. Tourists can also indulge in yachting, kayaking, water skiing, jet skiing, wind surfing, diving and snorkeling. The estuary, jetty, reef and the beach areas are great for fishing, and boat enthusiasts can hire a houseboat or yacht or join a tour.

Visitors can frequent the cafes and shops and explore the parklands, playgrounds and picnic areas, the piers and the marina along the Harvey Bay Esplanade. A bicycle ride to the Marina area and the Botanical Gardens with the Orchid House affords the visitor the opportunity to admire and enjoy the scenic foreshore.

The accommodation houses and hotels in Torquay and the rest of the Harvey Bay area provide plenty of options for visitors with different budget and tastes. Tourists can have their choices of resorts, apartments, lodges, villas, bed and breakfasts, motels, inns, hotels, hostels and guesthouses, and even farm stays. Some accommodation and flight booking sites claim to own accommodation options of up to 70% savings for tourists, and a range of trans-Tasman, Australian domestic and international flights. Visitors looking for cheap flights to Torquay should contact airline websites with flights to the refurbished Harvey Bay Airport from Brisbane, Sydney and other major cities. The Maryborough Airport is another airport in the Fraser Coast area but is used primarily for freight transport, recreational flying and flying training, and for medical air services. Obviously, there are no cheap flights to Torquay via this route.

Torquay, Harvey Bay should not be confused with the seaside town of Torquay in Devon, England although both share some sort of an affinity. The Australian Torquay is an Aboriginal expression that was changed to spell and sounds like the English Torquay.
