Thimphu or Thimpu is the largest city ion Bhutan and situated in the western central part of the country and it is where tourism is regulated to maintain a balance between traditions and modern living.
It is said that Thimphu's way of living is the reflection of Bhutan Culture. The town still adheres to ancient customs and traditions, superstitions and religious beliefs. Thimphu's attraction is its being the site of many government offices including the building of National Assembly and Bhutan's monarchy residential Dechencholing Palace.
The Tsechu Festival held during autumn is the most important tourist attraction in Thimphu, as Tashichhoe Dzong located in the city proper plays host to this most important Bhutan event. It is also the seat of Bhutan Dharma Raja or Druk Desi. It also serves as the summer capital of Bhutan.
Being a large city, Thimphu is divided into urban districts where different places of interest are located. In Changangkha district, there is Changangka Lhakhang, an ancient temple that houses a statue of Chenresign with its 11 heads and thousand arms, and a large prayer wheel containing Bhutan's sacred scriptures.
Over Motithang is a residential area where the first Bhutan hotel was built in 1974. This hotel is unlike many hotels in Thimphu as it was built in the middle of the forest surrounded by famrlands. In Chubachu, there’s the World Wide Fund for Nature responsible for tiger conservation in Bhutan. A market is located in the western bank of River Wang Chu and in Norsin Lam Road are the buildings of Bhutan Textile Museum and Bhutan National Library.
Cheap flights to Thimphu are popular mainly because of Tsechu Festival. Most of the time bookings for hotels in Thimphu are full and the price is a bit higher than the regular rates. Many cheap flights to Thimphu are directed to Paro Airport, as Thimphu has no airport.
Thimphu is slowly taking its time in embracing modernization. With slow-paced development, Bhutan is geared on becoming a dream city in the near future since it started opening its doors to the world. Bhutan is aimed at being the “world’s most beautiful destination”
