Temse is a Belgian municipality situated in Flanders, which is actually an important region of Belgium. A major tourist attraction here is the Forest Abbey that was established in 1105 as a Benedictine convent in the forest. It was built beside a tributary of the River Seine, located southwest of Brussels. The abbatial church was reconstructed in the 15th century but in 1796, the abbey was abolished. The nearby Congress Column is another important monument located on the Congresplein in the city of Brussels. It was constructed in 1830-31 to commemorate the founding of the state of Belgium and drafting of the constitution by the then National Congress. It was the brainchild of famous architect Joseph Poelaert and was constructed by Charles Rogier during the period 1850 to 1859. Trajan's Column located in Rome was the real inspiration behind building this monument. The Congress Column is 47 meters high and consists of 193 steps staircase in its interior, leading to a platform enclosing the base of King Leopold I’s statue, surmounting the column.
Another tourist hotspot is the Royal Greenhouses of Laeken, custom-made by King Leopold II. It is a huge compound comprising monumental heated greenhouses situated in the park of the Royal Castle of Laeken, in Belgian city of Brussels. A striking feature is a domed greenhouse called the Iron Church that was constructed to act as the royal chapel.
