Sumbawanga is a city plateau located in the western portion of Tanzania and serves as the capital of Rukwa region as well as the home of the Wafila Fipa tribe. The city is the supply and commercial center of the Rukwa Region.
Sumbawanga has a small taste of world fame when it was referred as the home of a fictional professional Quidditch team in the famous Harry Potter's series and as one of the route taken by Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman in their Long Way Down Motorcycle World Tour. However Sumbawanga also has a bad notion for witchcraft practice as it serves as home for "healers" and "Witchcraft practitioners". But, this does not make Sumbawanga as an unwise choice for a destination as the city offers diverse culture that is truly Tanzanian in nature. There is the Katavi National Park and the Kasanga Bismac Memorial Reserves which make Sumbawanga worth of a stopover before heading to other Tanzanian Tourists attractions.
Cheap flights to Sumbawanga are served by Auric Air in the runway of Sumbawanga Airport while it can be reached by bus from Mberya and by train from Mposhi. The nearest international airport is in Mpanda which serves airlines with cheap flights to Sumbawanga.
In the city center, there is a medium size market where local goods and farm produce can be bought. Also within the city center are some government offices and some small commercial buildings. Hotels in Sumbawanga are also within the city center offering low rates for overnight stay. There are B&B hotels offering good Belgian Breakfast and clean bed and bathroom with water supply.
The best way to explore the city is by foot or by bike as some of its road is not in good condition. The roads are muddy especially during the monsoon season as the city receives heavy rainfall causing mud floods. However Sumbawanga is a fast route to Dar es Salaam taking the train ride from Zambia.
Sumbawanga is a bustling city, a center of commercial and economic growth. It is a city where people have strict religious and superstitious beliefs making them as an integral part of its charms as a Tanzanian city worth of world travelers’ attention.
