About Sittard

Sittard, located in the province of Limburg, is a great tourist destination much favoured for its heritage city centre with several architectural monuments, excellent shopping and a vibrant nightlife. Sittard is a historic settlement; archaeological discoveries date its origin to around 5000 B.C. but the present-day town was founded in 850 A.D. It is possible to still see substantial remnants of the town’s walls that encircled the settlement and formed a vital part of the town’s defense fortifications. Basiliek van Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van het Heilig Hart is a Catholic church dating back to the 19th century that stands right on the middle of the city centre. This Dutch church is notable for being the first to be bestowed the status of a basilica minor in 1883 by Pope Leo XIII. The Sint-Petrus' Stoel van Antiochiëkerk, renovated and extended quite a few times, has a magnificent tower. Another star attraction in the city centre is the Het Domein museum that is housed in a 19th century school building. The museum is devoted to contemporary art, regional archaeology and urban history. Towards southeast on top of the Kollenberg hill is the St. Rosa Chapel. Tombs of 239 soldiers lie in the Commonwealth War Cemetery, among which included is world’s youngest Victoria Cross recipient, Dennis Donnini. Book any of the cheap flights to Sittard and discover the wealth of heritage in this small town.

The greatest advantage of sightseeing in Sittard is that the monuments are almost entirely situated in the city square where most of the shops, restaurants, and cafés too are located.
