Most often the word that best comes to traveler's minds when describing Sintra is the word 'fairytale.' Tip: Start your trip at the National Palace, and the stuff that legends are made of, with a combination of artistic styles, ranging from Romantic, Moorish, Gothicc and Manueline. The castles most notable feature are its ice cream cone shaped chimneys and pointed towers, is stunning-inside and out. The inside of the castle is equally impressive, with a Coat of Arms room, with deer holding coat of arms, a Swan room (whose ceiling is decorated with swans,) the formal banquet halls, and many more rooms of interest. One of the legends of the city, it's simply a site not to be missed.
Monserrate Palace is another favorite among visitors, a gorgeous Moorish/Gothic style castle, which is more akin to a large house. What often draws the most praise are its stunning grounds, with exotic plants, gorgeous gardens, waterfalls, and plants from all over the world, such as Mexico, China and Japan. A truly stunning and unforgettable experience!

Tip: Pena Castle is Sintra's leading tourist attraction, and an even grander attraction than the National Castle! It definitely looks like a castle straight out of a fairytale, and is one of Europe's most prized castles. A UNESCO World heritage site, it was built in the 1800's in a Romantic style. With gargoyles, drawbridges, courtyards, gorgeous facades in a myriad of colors, this castle is whimsical, charming and beautiful. Built on a mountain, it features scenic views of the surrounding areas and should be allotted at least hours to come and explore. The interior of the castle has gorgeous halls, and rooms which are kept as they were in the early 1900's, in a Victorian/Edwardian style. Be sure and make time for the grounds around the Pena Castle-Pena Park. The park features a wide selection of foreign flora and fauna, patios, fountains, hills and gorgeous views. A castle which is absolutely not to be missed and sure to inspire the entire family!
Sintra is also well loved for its stunning beaches, with Praia da Adraga heralded as one of the finest beaches in all of Europe. Other beautiful beaches include Guincho Beach, a beautiful place for locals to come, relax, enjoy the views and surf (it's not ideal for swimming.) Praia da Ursa is another well-loved beach, surrounded by stunning, jagged cliffs, and only accessible after a bit of a climb to reach it.
